Fireballs In The Sky

If you’ve ever seen a meteor, or a bright fireball, then you’ve experienced one of nature’s true wonders. If you’ve ever wondered what they are and where they come from, this app is for you. It will turn your smartphone into a scientific instrument that can quickly and easily record all the relevant information from a fireball sighting.

If enough other users observed the same event we can combine all the observations, work out the trajectory of the fireball, and determine the orbit of the rock before it hit the top of our atmosphere. We’ll then send you back details of what it was that you saw, and where it came from in the Solar System. As well as tracking your own fireballs you can view sightings reported by other people.

The app is also your way to access the Desert Fireball Network (DFN) research project at Curtin University. The DFN is a network of cameras that image the whole sky every 30 seconds, allowing us to get trajectories for fireballs, calculate their orbits, and determine fall positions for the rocks. The app will keep you up-to-date with fireball news and events, and allow you to view some of the incredible images from the DFN cameras in our picture gallery. By mid-2015 the DFN will be tracking whatever is coming through the atmosphere over about 1/3 of Oz. If you’re in Australia, and any of the DFN cameras spot one of your fireballs, we’ll update you with that info as well. Your observations will also help us – spotting fireballs that we miss, and getting more accurate trajectories for the ones that we see. You’ll be a part of a major new research project.

Also, now you can see upcoming meteor showers and use your phone to find out where in the sky to look when they're on!

The app is designed to allow you to record all the important information about a fireball soon after you see it, in a quick, easy, and fun way. It will let you:

• Pinpoint the altitude and azimuth of the start and end of the fireball

• Build your own fireball. Select different options for duration, shape, brightness, colour and hue, and watch how an animated fireball changes to match what you’ve just seen. If it looked like it fragmented as it came through the atmosphere you can select different options for number of fragments, and see the animation change accordingly.

• Add any other notes or details to your sighting report.

• Keep track of your sightings, and those of other users.

• Get updates on your sightings, and see levels of detail in feedback: Was it seen by other users? If it was, then how many other users saw it? Was there enough information to work out a trajectory? What was its orbit: where did it come from in the solar system?

In addition, you’ll be able to:

• Use your phone to locate meteor showers

• Get fireball news, and see updates on the DFN project, announcements and events

• Access our gallery of zoomable images – the fireballs we’ve seen and the meteorites that we’ve found. A great thing about the project is that the data are in the form of beautiful images. Se un numero sufficiente di altri utenti hanno osservato lo stesso evento possiamo combinare tutte le osservazioni, elaborare la traiettoria della palla di fuoco, e determinare l'orbita della roccia prima che ha colpito la parte superiore della nostra atmosfera. Vi invieremo indietro dettagli di ciò che è stato che si è visto, e da dove proviene nel Sistema Solare. Oltre a monitorare i tuoi propri bolidi puoi vedere avvistamenti segnalati da altre persone.

L'applicazione è anche il tuo modo di accedere al progetto di ricerca Desert Fireball Network (DFN) alla Curtin University. Il DFN è una rete di telecamere che di immagine tutto il cielo ogni 30 secondi, che ci permette di ottenere traiettorie per palle di fuoco, calcolare la loro orbite, e determinare le posizioni di caduta per le rocce. L'applicazione vi terrà aggiornati con news ed eventi bolide, e consentono di visualizzare alcune delle immagini incredibili dalle telecamere DFN nella nostra galleria di immagini. Entro la metà del 2015 il DFN sarà inseguendo tutto ciò che è in arrivo attraverso l'atmosfera su circa 1/3 di Oz. Se sei in Australia, e una delle telecamere macchia DFN una delle tue palle di fuoco, vi aggiorneremo con queste informazioni pure. Le vostre osservazioni saranno anche a noi - individuare palle di fuoco che ci manca, e ottenere traiettorie più precise per quelli che vediamo. Sarai una parte di un nuovo importante progetto di ricerca.

Inoltre, ora è possibile vedere i prossimi sciami meteorici e utilizzare il telefono per scoprire dove nel cielo a guardare quando sono in!

L'applicazione è stata progettata per consentire di registrare tutte le informazioni importanti su una palla di fuoco subito dopo lo vedi, in un modo veloce, facile e divertente. Essa ti consente di:

• Individuare l'altitudine e azimuth dell'inizio e della fine della palla di fuoco

• Costruire il proprio bolide. Selezionare diverse opzioni per la durata, la forma, la luminosità, il colore e la tonalità, e vedere come un animato modifiche bolide per abbinare quello che hai appena visto. Se sembrava che frammentata come è arrivata attraverso l'atmosfera è possibile selezionare diverse opzioni per il numero di frammenti, e vedere il cambiamento di animazione di conseguenza.

• Aggiungere eventuali altre note o dettagli sul rapporto di avvistamento.

• Tenere traccia dei vostri avvistamenti, e quelle di altri utenti.

• Ricevi aggiornamenti sui vostri avvistamenti, e vedere livelli di dettaglio in retroazione: Era visto dagli altri utenti? Se era, allora come molti altri utenti vedevano? C'era abbastanza informazioni per elaborare una traiettoria? Qual è stata la sua orbita: da dove proviene nel sistema solare?

Inoltre, sarete in grado di:

• Utilizzare il telefono per individuare sciami meteorici

• Scarica le notizie bolide, e vedere gli aggiornamenti sui DFN progetto, annunci ed eventi

• Accedi alla nostra galleria di immagini zoomabili - le palle di fuoco che abbiamo visto e le meteoriti che abbiamo trovato. Una cosa grande circa il progetto è che i dati sono in forma di belle immagini. Avrai accesso a tutto ciò che e in grado di vedere la migliore del gruppo per te.
